The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) of 1985 gives workers and families the right to extend their group health benefits for a limited period of time following certain circumstances such as job loss or transition, death, divorce or other life changes. In general, COBRA requires group health plans to offer continuation coverage for those sponsored by employers with 20-plus employees in the prior year in certain instances where plan coverage would otherwise end.
